Director Guillermo Del Toro has a lot of projects lined up for the big screen. Those include producing and writing a new "Haunted mansion" remake movie for Disney and an updated take on"Frankenstein." His recent plans to write and direct "At the Mountains of Madness" fell apart when Universal pictures decided not to fund the picture which James Cameron was set to produce.
Del Toro recently updated news of these projects when he spoke to movieweb. Del Toro's next project is "Pacific Rim," which is a huge 'Godzilla' type monster movie that he will direct. He's been busy with pre-production on that project for six months. Del Toro said "I was developing the visual bible for that. We hope to start shooting this September."
Heres what were going to see in "Pacific Rim" according to deadline Hollywood: The film will give del Toro the opportunity to create two worlds. The first is an alternate version of Earth in the near future, decades after a historic date in November 2012 when the first kaiju, a towering Godzilla-like beast, emerged from a hole in the Pacific Ocean and attacked the city of Osaka, Japan. The second is "The Anteverse," another universe on the other side of that gaping portal, 5 miles below our oceans surface.
Since the first attack, the rim has been "spitting out" a variety of gigantic monsters at an increasing rate, which then stride out of the ocean and begin destroying sea-bordering cities, like Tokyo and Los Angeles. In order to combat these monstrous, otherworldly menaces, the military developed the "Jaeger" program, which trains teams of two pilots to jointly operate massive, building-sized mechanized suits of armor and high-tech weaponry.
The bad news out of the update is the fate of "Hellboy 3" and if we'll ever see it happen at this point. At the current time, Universal Pictures has the rights to Hellboy and Del Toro says that nothing on that is moving forward. Del Toro said "There are no plans at all for 'Hellboy 3'."
This of course is a big change from the previous news earlier in the year when Del Toro said that "Hellboy 3" was waiting on star Ron Perlman to agree to it. Perlman stated that he felt very little desire to deal with the six hours of makeup again after Del Toro approached him with ideas for the 3rd and final film. Del Toro said that Perlman is happy enough to just work on his TV series "Sons of Anarchy" on FX, another makeup heavy role was nothing he wanted to attempt.
Then Perlman changed his mind and stated he was eager for the 3rd film. Perlman said "I hope there's a third Hellboy, simply because del Toro always thought of it as a trilogy. And when he set up that Liz Sherman, Hellboy's love interest] is pregnant with twins at the end of Hellboy 2, he kind of sketched out what the third Hellboy movie would look like. It's so theatrical. It's so epic. It's so dark."
I would love to see "Hellboy 3" on the big screen, so this news from Del Toro is sad to hear. Luckly for us things can change in Hollywood, so we might get lucky one of these days. The only one who is happy about this news on no 3rd "HB" movie is Mike Mignola.
Mignola says that he would like to decide Hellboy's fate in the comics before Del Toro finishes him off in the 3rd movie. Mignola says he's outlined Hellboy's fate, but has a few more stories to tell before he gives it to the fans.
Just bad news about "HB3," but "Pacific Rim" sounds like a lot of fun, so I am looking forward to see that. Del Toro knows how to do monsters, so we can count on a great creature-feature, What do you guys think?
